Twelve facing sealed federal charges after raids in Vegas, NevadaLAS VEGAS, Nevada - Twelve people were due in federal court Thursday after a drug and gang sweep that a Drug Enforcement Administration official said crippled a southern Nevada crack cocaine distribution ring with ties to a Los Angeles street gang.
"We believe we took down the heads of this cell in Las Vegas, Nevada," said Jose Martinez, spokesman for the DEA in Los Angeles, where one arrest was made Wednesday. "We also seized a number of automatic weapons and handguns. These individuals not only had gang ties but were also very violent."
Eleven people were arrested Wednesday in and around Las Vegas, Nevada, where U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden issued a statement saying arrest and search warrants remained sealed until Thursday for officer and public safety.
Martinez reported no violence and no injuries in the arrests. The sweep followed an eight-month undercover investigation of people with ties to the Los Angeles Crips gang, he said.
Eliso Villa, 27, of Compton, was the only California resident arrested. He was facing charges of possession with intent to distribute and conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.
Roxana Arteaga, 20, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was arrested in southern Nevada on similar charges, and Graylon Dillon, 31, and Johnny Jones, 25, both of Las Vegas, Nevada, were being held on charges of possession with intent to distribute.
Arphaxad Carroll, 33, and Kohath Carroll, 30, both of North Las Vegas, Nevada, and four Las Vegas, Nevada residents - Davion Brooks, 31; David Keith, 29; Jose Antonio Morales, 24; and Henry Villa-Chavez, 25 - were each facing charges of conspiracy to distribute and distribution of a controlled substance.
Damon James, 24, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was facing a distribution of a controlled substance charge, and Lavonne Norwood, 30, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was facing a money laundering charge.
Darnell Jernigan, 32, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was being sought on a charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, Martinez said.
Bogden announced that three homes each in Las Vegas, Nevada and North Las Vegas, Nevada were raided, and four bank accounts and 10 vehicles were seized.
The sweep was carried out by a task force of agents from the DEA, FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Marshal Service and police from Las Vegas, Nevada and surrounding communities.
