Online Prescription Drugs in Nevada

The high price of prescription medicine has sent a lot of people looking for bargains on the Internet. But online pharmacies might do you more harm than good. And that's why Nevada has outlawed them! Nexium, Vioxx, Allegra, Xanax, Lipitor and Viagra, they're all among the most commonly prescribed drugs. But these medications, and dozens more, are now available without a visit to a doctor or even a drugstore. All you need is a computer or a telephone!

Anchor Paula Francis made a call to test how the process works. In an 8-minute call to viamedic.com, she learn that ordering prescriptions isn't too much harder than ordering a pizza! She easily placed an order for 30 tablets of Xenical and 60 tablets of the Celebrex. Within a few days, the prescriptions arrive.

The order was filled by a pharmacist in Arizona using a prescription from a doctor in Florida -- both of whom knew very little about her health.

"I think this is utterly ridiculous." Doctor Arnold Wax is a Las Vegas, Nevada oncologist who regularly prescribes the pain reliever Celebrex to his cancer patients. "This drug is very toxic to the kidneys. Let's say Paula Francis -- and I'm not saying she does -- has an undiagnosed kidney problem and she takes this drug, it can be fatal. There's a risk of internal bleeding with this drug. Somebody needs to be monitoring this."

Even highly addictive drugs can be purchased online -- including the notorious one on which Rush Limbaugh got hooked -- Oxycontin. "It has the nickname 'hillbilly heroin,' because what happens is, drug addicts will take an Oxycontin tablet, dissolve it and inject it. Or even snort it and they get high from it," Dr. Wax said.

There are thousands of websites offering "medicines without a doctor's visit" -- but when they sell to the people of Nevada, they're breaking the law!

State Senator Valerie Wiener said, "In Nevada, we require that you visit a doctor (and) get a prescription after having an exam." Two years ago, Valerie Wiener sponsored the bill that prohibits the sale of prescriptions without an exam. "What you'll find out, many of those are vanity drugs. Many of them are drugs that you may not talk to your doctor about, but you'll go online to buy."

Some of the websites obey the law. But many obviously don't -- creating the perfect situation for the old warning, "let the buyer beware!" Dr. Wax continued, "They ultimately wind up hurting themselves. Don't do it."

The doctor who "prescribed" Paula's drugs -- Alan Saltzman -- is a licensed osteopath. But the Florida Department of Health says he has been disciplined 17 times -- including 3 times for malpractice! A spokesperson told Eyewitness News that doctors who work for websites that break the law could be disciplined -- or even prosecuted.
